The event was held in Camerino, and in that little town, there was a university that had not convened for the school year. The American contingent, stayed in the dormitories at the university. About the only thing I really remember about staying there, was that in the cafeteria, they used a band saw to cut the bread. It don't remember the bread as being that tough, but it must have been. But of course, I love most kinds of Italian breads, so maybe I was over looking that fact.

One rather funny occurance I can remember, was when we were getting out bikes ready for the event, Jim Hollander had his bike sitting on a low wall, sort of like on a milk crate. And for some reason, he started the bike up and the throttle stuck. When he pushed down on the back end to try and make the back wheel contact with the ground, to stall the bike, it jumped over the little wall, and headed right toward a glass enclosed vestibule. The only thing that saved the windows, was that somebody bulldogged the bike to the ground before the point of contact. Maybe Doug will remember a little more about the incident.

I have a "memento" of this event, hanging in our shop, and I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow and get the picture put on this thread.

In answer to Danes message.   The first night Dot and I arrived in Camarino we stayed in the marble dorms. there was only single beds in each room so we had adjoining rooms.   Luckly she was not about to stay by herself and slept with me, good thing.   About the wee hours of the night the Penton gang arrived, they were noisy and Dot said someone is in her room.   I said no and we finally went back to sleep.   In the morning I went to the room to check and sure enough there was Ted Penton in all his birthday glory sleeping on the bed.
At breakfast Dot and I were talking to Marsha McDonald and Suzie Mann.  They had been assingned a room in the convent downtown and wanted to be where the action was so we agreed to switch rooms.  After getting Ted relocated that is.   The convent was nice but had a community bathroom, one per floor.  It was difficult to get a warm shower almost anytime.   The Nuns that lived there would probably have kittens if the knew what was happening in there room.
I can't recall the Hollander incident but knowing Jim and some of the other duzees he pulled I can imagine the fun.
Speedy;    Actually Joel ask me if it was okay for him to pour in the Gss  [:o)]

Ok,
we now have the town that the event was hosted by and a little background form Doug and Dane on the city and living conditions.  We still need to establish who won metals at this Great event that are members of the POG.  O.Sherriff

Donny,
Your doing very well.  I will give a few others that had early answers this month to do their research.  Thanks for everyones input.  If you guess wrong who cares.  After all this is just a exercise in fun and reliving the Days That Penton Ruled.

O.Sherriff needs Doug or Dane to jump in here.  Donny did a number on POG Members that won Metals in 1974 at Camerino, Italy.  I know Carl Crank was there.....did he medal?  I am not sure if Billy Uhl is a POG member.  Even the Sherriff needs help..........HELP.
Interestingly enough a friend who is a guru on ISDTs always forgets to include Dave Mungenast in 1974...no reason.[B)]

Mr. Mungenast was'nt able to finish this one (49th, 1974, Italy) he was in too much pain from a broken toe on day 5, rode most of day 6, but ended it early.

On day 3 our Paul Danik rode off a cliff, cut his face, smashed his glasses, but got back on course and never lost time.
Paul, what was it like to ride without your glasses?, did you repair them or find a new pair?

Bob Ismalof rode his Penton to a Bronze medal finish

Penton riders that could not finish were, Rod Bush, Tom Shaw, Don Stover, and Mark Adent.

I think Carl Cranke won a gold, but he is not a member of the POG !?!?!
