Fork Stem O-ring Question

I'm rebuiling a 1972 125 Penton Six Day.  My question is regarding the O-rings that go on the lower and upper bearing race on the fork stem. The parts book show that the O-ring goes between the bearings and the bearing race (I also have a Penton manual that shows the O-ring goes ontop of the bearings.) Either way seems pecular. While I'm no expert, I have rebuilt a few motorcycles and have never seen an O-ring in this location. Do the bearings rest on top of the O-ring.

Help, I'm confused!

Chuck,

My bike had the O-Rings when I rebuilt it. They are to keep dust/mud out of the stearing head bearings. Al probably has replacments, see supplier section. If he does not have them I have ordered them from McMaster Carr in the past, p/n 9751K129. gOOD LUCK

Thanks Chris,

When I tore the bike down, the o-rings were there but I wonder if they're the correct size. The ones I have sit in the bearing race with the bearing sitting right on top. Is the o-ring supposed to fit around the outside of the bearings to keep dust out?

Thanks,

Chuck,

The O-ring is used to keep dirt and water out of the bearings so it should be just a little snug in the groove. If you can't find one that will actually fit into the groove, you can use one that fits snugly around the groove. You shouldn't put the O-rings in place until you have the steering head tightened properly. This will insure that the bearings are tight before you add the tension of the O-rings.

Last year I rebuilt the steering head on the 250. Al did not have the right size for it. I went down to local hardware store. I found some O rings that would have worked really well. I did the same thing for 400.

Last year I rebuilt the steering head on the 250. Al did not have the right size for me, so I went down to the hardware store and found some O rings that worked great. I did the same thing on the 400. If you have an old O ring you should be able to match it up pretty close. It does not have to be perfect it just needs to keep the crud out of the bearings. If I remember right, I did end up putting the O ring in the groove.

I knew I was having trouble but is amazing! It is like the guy that crashed and rang his bell and then when the medic ask him how many finger he was holding up he said. It looks to me there are 6 but I didn't know you could have that many fingers on one hand. :D
