Sorry for posting akward questions all the time but can any of you poggers help me with a question about gas tanks for 1977/1978 MC5's.

The problem I have is that in the 77 manual the tank is listed as part number 55.07.101.000 and in the 78 manual there are two numbers listed, one of which is the same as the 77 and the other is different. The different numbered one has a dot next to it which according to the key means "new part" and it also has nB listed under all the sizes of bike where it usually says the quantity which according to the key means "as requested" As well as that there is an 86mm gas cap listed "as requested" along with the 65mm cap which seems standard.

What does all this mean and is a 77 tank the same as a 78 apart from the stickers [?] [?] [?] [?]

Sorry for the long winded post guys but in pictures I've seen the 77 tank seems to have a bellied out bit down the front edge where the 78 doesn't.

Thanks for any help and info you can give me
Cheers
Chris :D

Chrisbo,
I believe the manual is referring to the "Desert" tank, which was larger capacity and has a larger filler neck and cap. I just bought another 78 MX-6 250 with the larger tank and my brother also has one. Mine was originally set up as Enduro models with lights and speedo, but I am not sure they all came that way. Tom Brosius was looking for one of the large 78 GS or "Desert" style fiberglass tanks the other day. I can email you pics of the bike and tank, if you need them. I also have a MC5 red tank in which the left side petcock is located farther rearward on the tank, which only fits the slim exhaust pipe, not a torque pipe, possibly used in 77 and the 78 MC5 MX small tanks have the petcock mounted farther forward which works with the torque pipe. If you would like me to email you some pics for comparison email me at [email protected] I hope that helps. Mike

Thanks Mike, I was looking at the pictures of two tanks and thought the 78 petcock looked further forward but couldn't figure out why.I think you've just cleared up the mystery for me :D clearance for the expansion chamber, Nice one, How did I miss that! In the words of the great Homer Simpson ...................................DOH![:o)]
Thanks again for the reply, I've sent you an email about the pictures.
Cheers
Chris.
