I have been having problems of late with Evilbay and was wondering if others were having the same problem. I recently bought a couple of items and the same thing happened. I bought a Pursang wheel for $9.00 and the guy charged me $60.00 shipping. I contected UPS and figured that that wheel cost $22.00 to ship. I paid for the item and shipping relucatly.  I recently got a set of Betor forks for $30 and the guy tried to charge me $70.00 to ship to the forks. I refused to pay for the item.

Any one else have the same problem of getting a deal then getting reamed with inflated shipping charges. The perps are guys that tend to break up bikes for parts as a business and not guys in the hobby. I left negative feedback for both of those folks.

Desmond,
What burns my britches are the rare items you leave a reasonable bid on , and next thing
the item is 'no longer for sale', nine out of ten times the seller has received an offer he/she
can't refuse and sell it offline, happened to me three times in two weeks.

That is one reason this group is so great, no shenanigans, just fair prices.

Desmond197,
Your exactly right. Can usually tell the gougers from the hobbiests by the shipping charges. Had a guy charge me $30 to ship two plastic fenders from MO to OK after I won an auction with no shipping cost provided. I refuse to allow that to happen again. Now I only go after items that list a reasonable shipping cost or will ask for a shipping quote prior to bidding. I'm sticking to that policy no matter how badly I might need a part. Within the last few days Ebay  sent out messages to all registered user about the subject of overcharging for shipping. They warned of suspending sellers who won't comply. I would suggest you send a complaint to Ebay about the sellers who did this to you. Better luck next time !!

Hi Desmond,
I sell quite a bit on eBay..and I try to list a shipping charge on all of my Auctions that way there's No Surprises..I do usally add a dollar or two to cover boxes, packaging material, etc, but it's there for everyone to see as I said No Surprises..as for my bidding on Auctions, 100% of the time if they don't have a shipping cost listed I email them to see what they want to ship it to me and sometimes it's a CRAZY amount and I either pass on there auction or email them and ask if they can send it a certain way for XXX amount of dollars..I do see sellers that want $8.00 to ship a magazine, when you can ship it anywhere from $2.00 Media Mail or $5.00 Priority Mail, but that's there option..my option is not to bid on there stuff..No matter how Bad I'd like to have it..Good Luck on your future bids..Buddy

To all, I've noticed an increase in sellers that rely on shipping charges to make theirs. The idea is to short cut ebay from fees earned off total final selling price by offering the item cheap and recouping the profit from the other end, by inflating handling charges...ebay makes nothing from the shipping and handling and the seller pays little for using ebay. Theres always someone who ruins it for everyone else.

I ran into the same problem here recently myself.  I will pay better attention to the sellers shipping costs. Lesson well learned:(

I had offered to pick the parts up instead and seller would not allow me to do that. That told me something was up.

This is an interesting topic for me too! I always try to list my shipping fees on the items that I sell. I do include a bit for the packing and printing materials used. The USPS offers Priority Mail materials free, but I still have to pay for the packing, labels and the ink to print them. The worst thing happened to me once when I sold a frame. I had shipped a few using FedEx for about 40 or 50 bucks, so I quoted a $50.00 shipping fee. Customer paid for the item, I packeged it up, drove down to the FedEx location only to find out that they increased the fees and it was going to cost me $93.00 to ship. Needless to say, I lost $$ on that deal, sold the frame for $35, got paid $50 for shipping, so I lost $8.00. On the fair side of this, the buyer, who was a member of out group offered to pay the difference in shipping, but it was my mistake so I declined. There is a steel tanker air box that I bid on and then I looked at the shipping of $21.00...... WOW, I could ship it Priority Mail for $8.10 with proof of delivery. $21.00 .... all I can say is WOW! Glad someone out bid me on it.

I can see a little bit over for packing ect. I do not have problem with that at all. But what these folks are doinng is they figure a top price, lets say for a set of forks is $100. The forks sell for $30 so $70 shipping they get thier top price regarless how well the auction goes. The bad feed back I left for this guy was mysteriously erased by ebay? I guess I will file a complaint againt him.

One other thing about buying from Donny Smith is his shipping is so fast.  I am always amazed when I buy something from him on ebay on Sunday and pay for it I normally have the part by Tuesday or Wednesday.  Thanks Donny for all the great parts you have provided to the Penton owners all around the world.
