Is the steel tank questionaire still in progress? Shame on me for not registering my 71's,but if its still happening,i'll fill out the form's questions.Better late than never, hopefully!Little differences in the 3 frames alone have me thirsting for info, for when i can finally get started on them.First things first-i'm building a rider and need to know any frame bracing/gusseting that should be done before painting(besides the break in the downtube engine cradle by r-h footpeg!).A painted ready to go frame might kickstart my long neglected projects. Thanks,Ric

Ric,
I'm still collecting and receiving Steel Tank questionnaires, the most recent being one I received just two days ago.  Every questionnaire is important to the Steel Tank project.  The more questionnaires we collect the more accurate the results will be.  I have currently received approximately 115 questionnaires and with a total steel tank production being around 6700 over a 4 year period, your questionnaires are definitely important.  To print off a questionnaire, go to the POG homepage and click on the "Steel Tank Project" navigation button or just click here:

Ric,
I never raced a steel frame Penton so everything I am mentioning here is what I have seen on bikes I have owed or helped other people repair.  Being a 1971 the frame should have the extra bracing around the rear of the engine mount.  As far as the frame breaking down near the foot pegs I have seen several things that could have helped this along, but I am sure that Doug, Jack, Paul or Dane would know a lot more than me.  I have seen one shock blown out or stuck and the other working fine flexing the frame and many loose bolts on the engine and swingarm.  Also I have seen swingarm bolts that were stuck or the bushings rusted to the bolt again contributing to frame breakage.  I am sure there are real experts out there that can tell you more, but I hope this helps.

Ric, I believe any Sachs engined Penton is allowed in Classic.

Currently all Sachs powered bikes are allowed in Classic Class but a steel tanker would get smoked even by a bit lesser rider.  The chassis is weaker, the wheelbase is too short, and the pipe technology is behind a generation.  The CMF bikes are far superior.

Larry,I would of course be entering the 125 in the Classic 100cc powder puff beginner -16 schoolgirl class.Any chance at all?!!!Seriously,i was thinking more along the lines of riding one in the reunion rides, etc. and an occasional ahrma mx or cross country, just for fun.Don't want to break it in half or anything though. Thanks for the input!,Ric

Ric,

You might try Classic 100cc Powder Puff Beginner-16 Schoolgirl Class With Cheese, though.:D  It's a little easier.

Ric,

No she lives in Arkansas now.  You would never cherry pick.  I myself prefer to pick pears.
