Hellow Poggers, just added to my collection a nice 73 Yellow Tank H/S, frame # 54-309 the eng # 3-5401174, clock reads 7/73, our site info states these were made from 6/73 to 10/73, are there any figures on how many were produced ?? thanks, Mike Gallagher

Mike and Bob,

Thanks for doing this research on the yellow Hare Scrambler.  My frame numer is 54 30666440.

My engine numer is 3-5400341 with the clock reading 3/73  On the left engine case is stamped just 341, possibly this engine was the 341st one built and yours was the 1174th one built. I think the engine numbers will give us a better indication as to how many of these were built as the frames were stamped on the line and all of the different models were apparently mixed into the production cycle.

I bought my bike from the original owner and it has the original fenders on it and they are plastic. The medal ones must have only been on the really early ones.

In a dealer price sheet dated 2/15/75 it shows the 250 Penton Hare Scrambler MX dealer cost at $1,345.00 and enduro at $ 1,1410.00, the enduro kit dealer cost apparently was $ 65.00  I will look for a dealer price sheet from closer to the yellow Hare Scrambler time frame later.

On a price list dated 5/10/76 there is a large notice that reads, " THERE ARE NO MORE ENDURO KITS ".

Thanks
Paul

My engine is #3-4500319. The clock is 3/73. So going by engine #'s might be the most accurate. My fenders are plastic but I'm sure they are not stock. Thanks

Bob,

It looks like you may have the 319th Hare Scrambler built, or at least the 319th black 250cc KTM serial production engine.  I would think your Hare Scrambler would be considered a 1973.

Hopefully we can get a few more of the numbers from some of the other Hare Scramblers still in circulation.

Mike,
The engine in My 311 frame dated early 74 red tank Hare scrambler 250 silver case engine is 3-5401964 and has a clock date of 10/73. Since November was considered the first month of the Red tank Hare scrambler, that would put 250 engine production prior to the red tank 74 version somwhat less than 1964. Mike

Just another note, our site states some engines came with an unpainted cylinder, this is how mine came. Paul D. and Michael W. i guess the engine #'s are what we have to work with unless someone else has more input ?? Anyone that has a Yellow Tanker that can help please chime in, thanks all.

Mike,
Even if more people could chime in with an earlier 74 Red tank 250 HS engine number than mine, we could narrow the production number down some. I wonder if spare engines produced for replacement/over the counter sale would also fall into the total units produced during the gold tank production run, and reduce the actual bike total. Mike

54 30 003 010.  Am I looking at something wrong?  Skip

Skip, hi, the # you have there appears to be a parts casting #, i got my # from the right side of the motor just below the cylinder near the front motor mount, look there and see what you have, thanks, Mike

Does anyone have, or know of a 73 Yellow tank 250 HareScrambler after engine # 3-5401848, or a Red tank 250 HareScrambler before # 3-5401964 to help narrow down the list? Thanks, Mike
