My new (to me) HS has a crack nr the kicker bolt (left case bottom) that looks like it was torqued down almost, deflecting a piece of the case. Is it feasible to weld in such an area (around kicker bolt hole). I'm skeptical but that would be nice. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose the alternative is to go on a hunt for a good left case. Best regards,John

See the other posts below about case repair.

John,

I would recommend weld repairing the area.  Based on the description in your post it sounds like all you need is a little cladding and then you can smooth out the area with a dremmel.  The repair I did on mine is still holding up fine.  Just find someone who is a reputable welder so you don't end up with a bigger problem than what you started with.

Does you bike have the black cases? They frequently broke around the kickstarter stop bolt, too thin, and people let the kickstarter fly beack up after kicking. The magnesium cases can be welded, but only after dissassembly and cleaning. If you plan on keeping, and riding the bike, I would suggest replacing the cases with the later model, and stronger silver cases. The black ones will also break around the right rear cylinder stud with hard use. Good luck, JP Morgen

Thank very much for the guidance. I might try JB Weld for short term and then new case if I can find one and mag weld if I can't. My cases are silver. I have a December '73 HS. Not that it matters but the bolt crack still has me puzzled because it must have taken quite a whomp to cause it (maybe kickback on attempted start?). Best, John

FYI - if you end up having to replace the case - you can't just replace the cracked half. Engine cases are a matched set & were machined for a proper fit at the factory.

You would then need a new "set" of cases.
