Hello Poggers.
For a very good friend of mine who is restoring a KTM 175 cc
1975-76 and he would like to set it up as a PENTON,we are looking for USA test informations about this model from that time.
Road tests from the MAG."CYCLE",--or " CYCLE ILLUSTRATED" from July 1975.
Can somebody who has those mags make me a good large readable copy of the pages and e-mail them to me.( [email protected] )
Thank you guys.
Cheers...

Speedy,  I have Cycle Guide Jan 76. which has a very nice article about the 175 Penton. Quote " Best Enduro? How about Best Motorcycle?" They really liked the bike and there is an inset to the article talking about John Penton and Ted Lapadakis and how KTM began in the U.S.
If you want I can mail copies to you, no scanner sorry. Just forward your mailing address and I will get it too ya.
While I have your attention, didn't you ride with Rodger and Ray Kussmaul over here in the U.S.? I was trying to dig up info for both but Ray in particular as he was nearly on the Silver Vase Team in Mass. Hollar back and the pages will be sent. there are some good photos also. Hope to meet you someday Speedy, you are one of my Hero's. Sincerely,TooTallPaul
p.s I would consider trading my MPH speedo for a Km unit if your friend has one. The plan for my 74 250 is to represent what the bike looked like in Euro trim as most of us never knew exactly what a KTM was back in the day.

Speedy, I will get the article out Monday. In the past week there were 2 Hercules for sale on Ebay and that brought you to mind. The one is a Gem Speedy. It showed very low miles and I would love to own it but it sits many miles away and shipping has gotten out of sight. One question, does the Sachs 175 share the shifting woes of my 125? Mine is not bad because its a low hour machine. Keep your head on shifting and you are OK,no missed shifts. Kinda wondered about the 175 and you have experience with them that few have. Thanks, TT Paul

Hello Paul.
When you speak about bad shifting on your 125cc,I guess you talk about a SACHS 6 speed engine???
Because all 7 Speed engines use the same shifter mechanism, there would be no difference in shifting, unless there is a shifter item in the system worn out or not installed the right way.
There are some tricks on the 7 speed shifting set up to make it even better as it came from the factory.
I sure do not have any problems with mine.:)
Considering that the 6 speed Sachs shifting system is not really the best, but with proper set up and TLC,they work fine.

Speedy, I sent you the original article rolled up in an envelope. First thing the lady at the P.O. did was crush it with a stamp. Hopefully it comes with no creases in case some want copies.
Thanks for the info in the 175 Sachs. Over the years I have trained myself to shift Euro bikes. Kind of wish I had a rocker shifter on my 125. Some of y'all dont know what that is. Shifting up with my heal makes for a more positive shift. Big ol HD's and even my newer Dresser have one but they went out of style on dirt bikes back in the Honda 90 days. Take care, TooTallPaul

I can help you Mr. Clasen.
The test in the July '75 Cycle Illustrated (all black & white) is from a British reporter, and the bike (enduro) is not stock in appearance, having a large Hi-Point after market tank.
There's alot of text though and it's okay reading.

I tried some scanning last night, and this is what I found.
When done as a "PDF document", the pictures don't turn out nearly as clear as in scanning like a "picture", but the text is better.
Also PDF documents turn out 8 1/2 x 11, typical page size.
While scanning as a picture - the images are clearer, but smaller text.

So.....I guess my question to you is, which is more important - the text or the pictures. Or which do you prefer ?

I'll be back home this evening, can get them to you tonight, or tomorrow evening.

Helmut, I should know you're too kind and considerate to be thankless. Other than asking you via another message, my computor gave me every indication they got there. I email with 8 pages attached to the address above [email protected] on the 18th.
Maybe they were intercepted at the border - the Mounties would'nt let me enter your country last time I tried.

It would be best if you told me what your German Jackpiner friend was looking for in particular. Is it a restoration for the eyes, or for the trail ? Is he looking for original pictures, as in maybe sales brochures.? Or just what would satisfy his needs most. I'm still here for you - you did'nt lose me.

Anyway - I just sent that 8 page article / test to you again, 10 minutes ago.

Bob

Helmut,
aaaaah-hmmmm-geeez ? my big giant brain is baffled by this lack of cyber transmission .....but I'll try to fiqure it out when I'm at home.

For Roberto's sake, about the only things different between '75 branded KTM and Penton 175's are - the decals, and (I'm pretty sure) the size and color of the headlight.
