Kid Christopher and I decided to take a hike last weekend to add some variety to our workout routine.  We chose the Beech Bottom trail in the Cohutta Wilderness (N. Georgia).  We had a vigorous workout with a total distance of about 10 miles and got to spend the whole day in the woods.  The remoteness and scenery produced a sense of wonder seldom experienced.  It was a truly fantastic outing that appeared worlds away yet only required a 1-1/2 hour drive.  I enjoyed the change of pace so much that I came away thinking, "Why don't I do this more?"  No membership fee, no entry fee, no long drives, no parts to buy, no engines to rebuild ... no chance for a hole shot -- Yikes!   It's not a perfect solution, but I'll be looking for more opportunities to walk in the Wilderness.

Sounds like a fantastic hike Ernie.

My wife & I went to Jackson Hole last summer & took a fantastic hike up the gorge between two of the Grand Tetons. Our only limiting factor was the amount of water that we carried (bought a camelbak the week I got home).

You are right - It is a completely DIFFERENT view of the woods at 1/2 to 1 mph.

We came back psyched to do more hiking.

Congrats on the quality time together.

I spend quite a bit of time in the woods not including being on a motorcycle. I love to hike & mountain bike. Living in Clemson, SC I'm lucky to be able to use the University property for my pleasure. I just wish they would let me ride my motorcycle on one of their many tracs of land.

One of the other enjoyments with my time in the woods is seeing the wildlife. Last week I spooked up a bobcat. Neat to see it run.

Hello All.
We have a old railroad line here that is now a rail trail. Its 72 miles long with several old tunnels that you hike thru. Theres plenty of wilderness along the route along with wildlife. It's mostly level hiking with some small grades. We try to hike the whole thing every summer in 1 week, camping out along the way. We carry 30 lb packs of gear and usually hike 10-14 miles a day. The rest of the year we do short hikes on the weekends. It's great fun and really a good cardio workout! We even take the dog.
