Stephen,
Frame # 550 01360 is a '76 MC5.
I've never heard or seen of a eng. # like that. That must be the case part #. What color is your engine.

Stephen,

The s/n you listed is not a s/n, but it is a part number.  The serial number is stamped into the right side engine case, just below the cylinder.  If my info is correct, in 73 the 250 engine didn't show until June and was in only one model, Hare Scrambler.  Therefore, your frame number should read 308***** up to 312*****.  After Dec 1973 the frame numbers went to 401***** ie.(Jan 1974)

Also, the frame number is odd.  The frame number should consist of 8 digits and it is located on the fork stem portion of the frame or on a plate welder to the stem.  The number you listed as a frame number looks more correctly like an engine number.

Thanks to everyone for the information!  I ommitted an important detail which is that the engine and frame were not married together i.e., I acquired both items as seperate lots.

Additionally...

Regarding the Frame: The number 550 01360 was stamped on a gusset plate welded to the right hand side of the steering neck.  No other numbers were found on this frame.

Regarding the Engine: Yes, the number I provided was taken from the primary cover and is the p/n of the cover itself, not the engine s/n.  I'm not sure if the Engine retains its original factory finish but the covers, cylinder, and head are all Magnesium in color and the oval KTM badge on the primary and timing covers is Orange.

I'll be happy to reply to your e-mails with pictures of both Engine and Frame.

Thanks-

Stephen

Stephen,
The frame is definitely a 1976 MC5 frame and the engine is likely a late 1973 or very early 1974 250. The engine nuber is stamped into the engine case just above the ignition cover on the right hand side of the engine and will look like: 3-54xxxx or 4-54xxxx depending on whether it is a 1973 or 1974 250. Most 1973 engine cases are black in color. Mike

Stephen,
If you are trying to match up the engine with a frame from the same year or close to it, the 3rd frame from the front in your pictures, if it is a 250 frame, appears to be the design closest to match the engine date. Mike

I dunno Tom, the last (farthest) frame looks more like a 74ish to me.
The 3rd one looks like a late 75,   The numbers would make it clear for sure.

The farthest frame is  74 1/2-76 with the heavier rear frame rails for the laid down shock position, but the 3 from the front appears to be an early 74 frame with the single upper shock position and the side mounted rear fender tabs. Since the engine is most likely an early 74 250, I would guess that it would be most correct in that frame. Mike

Stephen,

Frames: Front to back
.1976 MC5 for 125, 175, 250, & 400.
.1972 175 Jackpiner
.1974 for 175 & 250
.1974 1/2 thru 1976 Cross Country, for 175, 250, & 400.

Those are the engines that were originally available in those frames, but you can use ANY KTM (125 -400) engine from 1972 thru 1978 in ANY of those frames.

Many thanks to all who have taken time to reply to this topic.  It's just one more reason why I renew my POG membership year after year...Thank You!

I'm currently working on a '71 six-days project and am currently looking for a period correct 125cc engine.  There are several other bits and pieces I need but have yet to complete my parts list.  I am working to have this bike ready for display at Mid-Ohio.

As for the other four frames those too are longer term projects for which I will slowly source parts.  My plan is to restore one of these four frames with my son.

Stay tuned...I'll post more questions as I progress with these projects.

Thanks again!

Stephen

Stephen,

Maybe you could furnish the frame numbers of the other frames.

Tony
