Well, they have come a long way.  In the early 80s, when I was assigned to the 2d Inf/1st Regt, 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, WA, we had basic off-the-shelf Kawasaki KL 250s painted green with some racks on them. We used them primarily for battalion runners(messengers) and recon.  The infantry battalion I was in had Mickey Thompsons dune buggies which we used as a "surrogate" to validate a concept for a "fast attack vehicle"(FAV).

There is this guy out here in Barstow CA, that shoe-horned a Ducati Farm Implement twin diesel into a 198? CM400 Honda.  It looks pretty darn good plus he says it gets around 200 MPG!!!!  He let me ride it one day and it has promise.  I think the donner bike frame/neck might be bent, cause it pulled to the left and everything looked pretty centered. Around 50 + the vibration was pretty bad. Around town it was pretty good.

The amazing thing about this, is, he lives in a U-Haul Self Storage unit and had to craft everything by hand with parts and scraps he found out here for free.  Plus, The only power he has is a little overhead light socket.
