I have Tommy Brooks dads bike. I completely restored it(it was in very bad shape). The story is that he overalled a desert race on this bike because his was not available that particular weekend.Took it around the block-it has pretty good pull for a 125 but is loud as sin!

Were you guys on a modern KTM? I thought you were on a SixDays!

I,m pulling your leg a bit! But do check it down there-mine broke and my brothers also cracked if I remember(Iam talking about the 72 frame). It is funny how the Old Man never mentioned in ads at the time about just how much welding behind barns went on during the Six-Days. You might get someone to own up to it. I mean, they were built be a bicycle mfg.

You should have kept your eyes open-somewhere between Vegas and Reno is fanny pack that has a complete Sachs ignition in it. We carried it as a spare and it fell off on one of my sections.Check your frame-it is cracked down by the engine mount/footpeg area.

Penton Racing Talk / VEGAS TO RENO THE LONG WAY

We ran 14/56 which is stock for a DKW. If I remember I rode mostly in 3rd and 4th gears except a few dry lake beds where I got her in 6th! We wanted to finish so we did not push it at all. Only time in my life where people actually cheered for me as I came thru the pits.We will cheer for you as well.

We went the whole way in 1 day/night. Thats why we used the Bosch mag. Dont trust those old Motosplats!A Sachs motor will run a long time and no doubt will finish.Good luck.

O.K. We did it in 98 on the DKW.18 hours and 28 minutes.A few notes-build a stock B motor, you dont need a hotrod engine. Your going to need a Bosch Magneto with a rewound light coil. We even carried a spare ignition just in case. Check things like wheel bearings and other parts that you would normally not worry about! Save all of your luck-you will need it! contact me if you have questions.

Penton Talk / Porting specs for the 100 cc Sachs
January 07, 2008, 05:09:38 PM
Mill .060 off the head and recut the chamber angles (or find a GS head).Smooth out the base of the transfers and remove excess material where the liner mates with the cylinder. You may want to cut the intake side of the piston a bit as well to increase intake timing. You can raise the exhaust a little but I would go against widening it-you could snag a ring. When changing timing you will make it somewhat pipey with a chance of loading up so you would have to ride it accordingly

Penton Racing Talk / new 100 cc Class

IMO the very best offroad racers on the WORLD started out on 100cc bikes. When do don't have power you must substitute skill. I remember reading about the ISDT or maybe a qualifier where Dane slid all the way down a hill still holding on to the handlebars keeping the engine running and remounting to climb it again. now that's skill!

Penton Racing Talk / new 100 cc Class

5 or 6 speed gearboxes should not matter IMO. One of the reasons I no longer participate is the fact that there was no 100cc class so we were forced to race with Huskies, CZ's and all the other bike bikes. While it is fun to go around the course nobody wants to get smoked!
At the Elsinore GP a few years ago the opened a 100cc class. I thought Hooray until a sleeved down(supposedly)honda Elsinore lined up next to me. The next year a couple of really trick Suzuki TM100's showed up and darn near lapped everyone.
I don't have answers for these situations. Maybe 72 should be the cutoff date but then you limit a small class even further. The technolgy jump from 72 to 74 was massive. In looking through my old Cycle news want ads from 74/75 there were all kinds of Pentons, dkw's and other euro bikes being sold and waiting lists at the honda-Yamaha-Suzuki dealers.

I think they are hiding from Ted Lapadakis after hiring Ted's secretary to steal tuning secrets from Tom Ruddy.

Penton Talk / Crank balancing
June 07, 2007, 03:41:42 PM
I have an old Cycle News article about engine porting by E.C.Birt.In the article he states that while all engines run a little rough Sachs engines are a little rougher than most.At the time he balanced the motor(exactly how he did not state)and he also welded the center of the Bosch magneto to the outer part. They had a nasty habit of breaking loose over time because they were swaged together. I actually have a late model Bosch mag that is riveted together.
Edlebrock used to balance 2 stroke motors back in the day.I wonder if the Sachs factory did anything special for the 6 Days motors(the event-not the bike).Did they run the GS or stock? another trick I have come across over the years was to run a KTM rod which is wider at the big end by machining the crank halfs inner.

If you bring that 100cc berkshire out to the desert I will bring the 100 Deek out as well.We can run them down a fire road just like the old days. In fact, I raced the 100's race in the early 90's on the DKW and finished.
