Wanted / For Sale / WTB penton 175
November 02, 2017, 07:25:27 PM
Canyon,
I have a 73 and 74 JP that I could part with. They are both fully restored with many new parts, and enduro equipped. The 73 is reed valve equipped. Neither have seen the dirt since restoration, and both start and run well. If you have access to the POG calendars, they are both featured on the June, 2011 page. I can email you photos and more information if you are interested. The prices are reasonable and negotiable.

Penton Talk / To Restore or not to Restore.
January 21, 2016, 12:36:05 PM
John,
I have an original sticker (not decal) that is in good enough condition to be reproduced by a graphics design company. They made two reproductions for me for $65 a few years back. If you want to go that route, I would be glad to loan you the original. The company that I used has moved and I'm not sure they would still offer the same service. Let me know if you would like to see photos of the reproductions. (linglewn at aol dot com)

John and/or Paul,
My DKW MX is complete and original except that I have not been able to find a stock silencer like the one on John's bike. Can either of you help?

Penton Talk / Front Brake

No problem. Clean it first with solvent and then an abrasive down to the metal. Bend a U-shaped strip of thin sheet metal the shape of the unbroken bracket. Using JB Weld (or any good epoxy) replace the broken piece with the bent sheet metal over the bracket. After the epoxy sets up, I would bet that you can throw it on the floor and it won't break.

Penton Talk / Jackpiner GS Pipe Identification
January 28, 2013, 03:50:00 PM
Dan,
I just measured a stock '73 JP exhaust header pipe. The I.D. is 1.75 and the O.D. measures 1.85-1.9. It has one frame mounting tab on the top toward the front and one on the bottom where it mounts to the right side of the frame. An additional mounting tab is at the top rear by the silencer. Hope this helps.

Penton Talk / What Did You Do To Your PENTON Today?
July 23, 2012, 04:22:11 PM
I felt so bad about not making it to VMD this year that I uncovered all three of my vintage bikes, prepped them, cranked them up and rode them around the neighborhood. Not nearly as exciting as being at VMD, but at least the sound and smell of the 2-strokes get the juices flowing. Hope everyone enjoyed VMD.

Penton Talk / Wheel Options
April 10, 2012, 07:20:13 PM
I have purchased several sets of Radaellis from Walridge and have always been satisfied with the service and the quality of the rims and spokes. It has been a couple of years, but the last ones that I baught from them were about $105 U.S. each.

Penton Talk / Transport needed
March 25, 2012, 07:30:34 PM
Ted,
I will be coming from Oak Ridge, TN to the Dayton, OH area on April 20. If you can get the bike from Nashville to Oak Ridge and don't mind it being hauled on an open trailer, I can hook up the trailer and bring it along. If I can help, let me know. [email protected]

Penton Talk / seized
October 12, 2011, 08:05:48 PM
You mentioned that the engine had just been rebuilt. Are you sure that you have the proper piston-to-cylinder clearance? A too-tight piston will generate heat and quickly cause seizure. It pays to look for the simple things first.

Penton Talk / June......coming to an end
June 28, 2011, 10:02:40 AM
Paul,
Thanks very much for the compliments. The '73 is a March version, and the '74 is from April. Credit for the gardening goes to my wife. I just help with the grunt work.

My thanks also to Randy for all the work he puts into the calendars.

Penton Talk / Kill button

If the '69 switch is like the later ones, the kill button is the round one on the top of the switch housing.

The '73 with black engine has the hocky stick, but the '74 with silver engine has the straight brace.

Penton Talk / Two stroke theory question
January 10, 2011, 07:39:30 PM
Brian,
I would definitely stuff these balancing holes with something light weight. It won't solve your bigger problem, but it's certainly the right thing to do.

I had a mid-70s 175 Husky, and, as I remember, it had lots of mid-range torque (compared to my DKW).

Penton Talk / Two stroke theory question
January 10, 2011, 05:18:27 PM
Brian,
I'm sure you have properly tuned the carb and ignition and checked for adequate compression. In my humble opinion I doubt seriously that the piston window area is your problem. Although a smaller carb may help some on low end, the reed valve will, to some extent, vary the flow area as a function of the natural frequency of the reed and the negative pressure in the crankcase. The reed natural frequency can be tuned to a certain RPM by changing the reed material or thickness. The crankcase pressure, which you want to be as low as possible, is affected by crankcase volume, including transfer passages, port timing, and to some extent expansion chamber design. I think you are on the right track with the port timing differences. If you have access to a less radical cylinder, it would be interesting to measure the differences, and, of course, run them both to see if there is an improvement. I suspect you will find that the radical cylinder is ported higher (exhaust port opens earlier) and has less blowdown (less distance from the exhaust port to the opening of the transfer ports) than the non-radical cylinder. Good luck, and I hope this is useful food for thought.
