Mike

All well here, thanks. Al's are OK, but I'm looking for a set of originals in good shape. Al's are a copy of later petcocks and I need the earlier ones. Thanks for your help, though.

Penton Talk / THE GEEK FACTOR OF ANAL RESTORE
August 22, 2006, 04:09:13 PM
This is an old controversy and my feeling is that there is room for everyone. Speaking for myself, I have very poor eyesight and cannot race. I enjoy building the most accurate Pentons I can and entering them in shows. I think it will be noce in 20 or so years to have a few Pentons around still in showroom condition.

I plead guilty to being anal retentive regarding research and execution of my restorations. There is no such thing as "good enough". It has to be as good as I can possibly make it.

Anyway, There's room for all of us and I think both schools of thought complement one another.

Wanted / For Sale / 1972 six day for sale

No apologies necessary. I probably should have put in a little more of a description, but will do so now. Bike has a perfect pipe and heat shield, toaster tank with no leaks and excellent finish, rechromed radalli rims w/no dings, NJB shocks, new magura levers and throttle. Alloy airbox cover that is perfectly straight. NOS 5a motor w/motoplat exchanged for points (I bought the motor in the box from Mike Mefford). Bike needs nothing but is an older resto so is not in absolutely show condition. Probably 9 out of 10. It is ready to ride as is and needs very little to be a 10 again.

Thank you for your kind words, Doug. I also did not mean to type my previous reply in caps.

The Hare Scrambler is a low, low time bike I bought from a very nice man in CT. He had just bought a GT40 and his wife made him sell his Pentons. Pity. The bike was unrestored, but barely used. I did a frame off resto as it was too rough not to. Al Buehner was a big help as I'm sure you all know. His repro parts are the best. I spent a year and didn't skimp on anything. The motor only needed a new set of standard rings, seals and gaskets. Carb was sent to Bing Int'l for a complete rebuild. Motoplat still had a very healthy spark. Hubs and frame were powdercoated, cases painted. Rims had no dings, polished out well. New stainless spokes. My painter does mostly custom chopper work, this job was easy for him. I lined the tank with marine epoxy and it works well. Swingarm bearings were free and lubed when I got the bike. New ones were thankfully not needed. I must give much credit to Bill West of Vintage Works in Clovis, Ca. He does great work. He laced the wheels, had the frame powdercoated, etc (559 348 1316). Russ Powell in Novato, Ca. did the motor. He is great with the special needs of KTM motors (415 305 1946). I built the bike slowly and carefully, paying close attention to detail. If anything was even slightly supect, it was replaced. I can't deal with "its good enough" I was very surprised to get an award at the concours in Half Moon Bay. My ideal would be to have the Dean of Penton restorers, Kip Kern, take a close look at the bike and maybe say "Ya did okay". Then I would know all my efforts were worth it.........

This bike is owned by Blair Beck - Beck's Vintage Bikes - Pacheco, CA
This event was an invitation only 1st year Legend of the Motorcyle Concours de Elegance for vintage bikes.  A real 1st class show.  This 1973 Penton Hare Scrambler actually won 1st place in its class at this show.  Pretty amazing given that there were many many special bikes at this show where the featured marques were Brough Superiors and Crockers.  There were over 200 bikes in the show!  PENTON RULES!

Can anyone tell us about this event and maybe give us some info on this fine looking Penton?

Somebody must have had a bit of "pull" to be allowed to display these machines on this golf course.  Better not be any leakers in the bunch!

Thanks

Penton Talk / A Tough One
July 02, 2010, 01:34:22 PM
I know this will be a hard one, but does anyone know where I could get the little brads that fasten the mud flap on to the fender of a 72 Six Day? I've tried McMaster-Carr, and even looked at scrapbooking websites to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Penton Talk / speedo drive cap

Anybody know where I can get the speedo drive cap for the Sachs Motor? My 72 Six Day is almost done and I was hoping someone might know where a reasonable facsimile of this part can be obtained. Thanks.
