June 04, 2021, 04:39:39 PM
The seats are different - different bases, the exhaust pipes are different, Gas tanks are different - wide tunnel under 77 250. Frame loop is different. Carbs could be different. Headlight is different. Wiring is different for tail light.

Great question Tom,
My fastest is 220 kmph on my boss Douglas Kirk's 1976 Ducati Desmo 750 super sport. Lunch break from summer high school job at his injection molding factory in Starks, Illinois. 5 mile two lane asphalt country road with unmarked intersections and only a few driveways coming off the road in the middle of corn fields. Concentration on the road ahead and shifting the bike correctly so no awareness of speed until I saw that the telephone poles along the side of the road were going by very quickly. Looked at the speedo and saw 220. Rode it back at the posted limit and figured that 220 was about 135 mph. Thought about it some more and figured that was about 200 feet per second. Thought about what might have happened if an animal had run out of the corn field in front of me while traveling at that speed with only a T shirt, blue jeans, gym shoes, and only a helmet for protection. Decided that I would stick to riding in the dirt and stay away from street bikes - way too easy to go too fast.

Do you know where to get one of those Carl Cranke 250 cylinders?:)

Penton Racing Talk / pre 72 Penton
May 13, 2020, 11:38:26 AM
Hey Mutt - welcome to the group! To answer your question, click on the home button at the top of the page below the Penton Owners Group line. Once the Home page opens up, click on the Production Year Guide.
You can read about the different Penton models and their features to see which Penton your friend has. Green tanks were generally on 125 cc "six day" bikes from 1968 through 1975, but in 1977, I think all Pentons had orange tanks - 125 cc through 400 cc. Yes, a lot of Pentons had aluminum cases with 6 speed transmissions. Good luck with your search and let us know which one he has.

Wanted / For Sale / Guennady Moisseev's 1977 KTM

Hi Mike and Larry,
I think that the number 6 was Vladimir Kavinov. If not, it was Valery Korneev. Great pictures Mike. Keep posting more if you have more.

Hi Mike,
My guess is either Ron Huffman from St Petersburg Florida or John Franklin from Madera California. Are you sure it is Honda Hills?

Hi Jeff,
Yes there were large (enduro) and small (motocross) tanks for the 1977 gs6. Both tanks have the wide tunnel for the wide high breather frame backbone on the 1977 gs6. The small motocross tank is much harder to find than the large enduro tank. I have both for my 1977 gs6 250 and they are orange and have the black and white stripes with world champion in the stripe and a Penton sticker in block letters above the stripe. I have seen the same with a KTM sticker instead of the Penton sticker above the black and white stripe.

Jake Fischer has some NOS Penton side panels listed on ebay now for $80 each. The ones in the picture are blue and yellow but he may have the orange and yellow ones you are looking for. Or you could buy the blue and yellow and repaint them like you want them.

Hi All,
According to Gunnar Lindstrom's book "Husqvarna Success" (page 49) a 250 cc off road Husky arrived through Cardinal Motorcycles in New York in 1963 ( the only 1 of 100 made that year which made it to the USA in 1963 ) and was found in the back of Mr Penton's shop 35 years later - in original condition! ??? I wonder when it got to his shop { I would guess that it was after 1966) ? The book has some sections about the 8 speed Huskies and covers Husqvarna's history from 1953-2007. Always interested in Husqvarna's, and when they intersect with Mr Penton, that makes it even more interesting!

Penton Talk / Jack's last Penton
February 19, 2020, 11:09:44 AM
I am currently building an unauthorized "Jack Penton replica" 77 GS6 250. The differences from a stock 77 GS6 250 that I can see are:
Carl Cranke ported cylinder with the corners of the barrel fins cut off.
Modified MC5 pipe with removeable Super Trapp discs on the "silencer".
Orange Preston Petty MX front fender and orange enduro rear fender.
Axles have their pull bars extended or pushed half way through so they can be pulled on evenly and are painted orange.
Chain adjuster welded to wheel spacer and removeable as one unit.
Lectron carburetor option.
ISDT Magura levers and adjusters.
Yellow Preston Petty headlight/number plate.
Unknown rear shocks with red and blue springs.
Unknown black hand guards.
Wide tunnel orange MX tank for GS frame.
Modified foot pegs.
I believe that Gary Roach has worked on this bike.
These are all notes from pictures taken years ago, so his bike as it sits today may have changed.

Penton Talk / NEW PENTON OWNER 1977 MC5 400 in MALIBU CA
February 18, 2020, 04:43:58 PM
Hi Jeff and welcome to the group!
Use the search feature in the upper right hand corner or go to the home page and use the search feature. Type in - 77 MC5 colors - and you will begin to understand why you haven't received a response yet. The colors of your bike do not necessarily mean that it was for European delivery and may be how the bike was delivered here in the USA. After reading the answers in the search you can decide which scheme is right for you. I am working on a 1977 GS6 250 and it is orange and yellow.

After that thread you should use the feature again to see how to tame the power delivery on that beast when it is not sleeping.:)
