Wanted / For Sale / pipe guard

I think so Ron, but check with some of the other Penton experts to be sure. I sold my last one but will get more built if there is a demand. Let me know at [email protected]. Thanks, Curtis

Penton Talk / Octane Boosting

Sorry, but I disagree with your opinion on AV fuel running to hot. AV fuel is usually 100LL (100 octane low lead) the higher the octane the slower and COOLER the burn. AV fuel is more higher refined than pump gas and does not have all the crappy additives added to pump gas either. I know many people active in motocross and supercross that use AV fuel and have no problems.

I dont know Kirk, you could call Al Buhner or others listed on this site that sell parts. They are custom made so could be fabricated to fit even if slightly different from the 125. Maybe someone will see your question here that knows the answer.

Penton Talk / Sachs 125cc shifting problems
June 08, 2001, 08:19:35 PM
I just finished a complete resto on a 72 125. I borrowed the shifter tool from Rick Grant but believe you could get by without it. If you wanted to you could build one pretty easy. all it is is a piece of aluminum about 3/4 inch thick with 2 holes drilled to match 2 of the side cover mounting screws. It only gives support to the shift mechanism in absence of the clutch cover. I believe a more important tool will be a dial caliper which I found indespensible for making all the necessary shim adjustments. The Sachs engine and transmission is very simple and I found if you take your time and read carefully anyone with a little mechanical aptitude can master a rebuild project. There are other special tools that I was abel to improvise and get by without. Good luck, Curtis

Penton Talk / 125 flywheel
May 28, 2001, 05:22:13 PM
Thanks Doug, but I forgot to mention it has points ignition. It is a B motor and think it origionally came with Motoplat but someone must have converted back to old point system. I prefer the points anyway, seems less costly to deal with. Anyway, my questions still stand in need of an answer. When you say 3 MM advance do you mean measuring piston to bore or do you mean on flywheel? I guess the advance would be same for points or Motoplat? Thanks, Curtis

Thanks Mark, does this mean all postings eventually end up on the old board for reference purposes. I hope so, hate to loose so much valuable info. Curtis

May 01, 2001, 10:01:48 AM
Thanks Kip, I sawed the swing arm bolt in to with a sawzall and pressed out the bushings. I have new ones from Al ready to install. I also found a trick way to remove the crank outer races. Let me know if you are interested in learning about this. Thanks, Curtis

Penton Talk / Octane Boosting
April 03, 2001, 09:13:15 PM
Hi Tim, Im a new member and dont know much about Penton's but I do know a good bit about newer 2 strobe motorcross bikes and some of my friends that race use aviation fuel. I have used it in my son's Honda CR250 and 125 race bike to. It is 100 octane low lead, very highly refined and burns very clean. It does not have the crappy additives in pump gas either ans usually cost about $2.50 gallon. Im restoring a 72 Penton 126 6 day and will run in it to. If anyone else has an opinion on this subject I would like to hear from them. Thanks, Curtis

Penton Talk / ignition problem
June 21, 2001, 09:09:47 AM
Hi POG members, I posted this the other day and was referred to the Penton owners manual (thanks Kip for your response). The manual does not cover trouble shooting the components, only setting the points and armature. I need to know how to determine if the problem is with the ignition armature, condensor or ignition coil. The bike has new points and are set correctly, as it was running fine one minute and the next no fire. Thanks for some advice, Curtis

Penton Talk / ignition problems
June 16, 2001, 06:14:43 PM
Hello POG members, I have a 1972 125 six day I recently restored. Someone apparently converted it to points ignition before I acquired it. The points were recently replaced and seem to be good. The bike has ran fine the short time I have run it since finishing the resto but I went to start it and found I have no fire at the plug. It must be either the condensor, ignition armature or coil. I used a test light and battery to be sure the points were opening and all seems ok. Can someone describe the testing procedure and any voltage or resistance values I need to check for. Many thanks, Curtis

I have access to remanufactured aluminum heat shields to fit early 70s model 125s. I have one on my 72 6 day and it looks as good as origional. It is made from brushed hardened aluminum and is very thick. If anyone is interested email me at [email protected] and I will email a photo or answer your questions. Curtis

Penton Talk / 125 flywheel
May 26, 2001, 07:44:36 AM
Hello fellow Penton owners, Im restoring a 72 125 six day. While re-assembly of engine I install ignition and flywheel and realize there are no markings on the wheel. Can some one tell me the degrees of advance timing, the distance of piston to top of barrel or the measurment form TDC mark that I can place on wheel to new mark that will allow proper advance? Any tips or tricks will be appreciated. Thanks Curtis
