Penton Talk / Removing swingarm bearings - helpful hint
November 12, 2007, 06:57:09 AM
I haven't used the CRC product, so I don't know how it compares.  But with the Loctite I sprayed the bearing for about 20 seconds, waited a few minutes and gave it another 20 seconds.  It got so cold there was frost on the outside of the swingarm, and the penetrating lube managed to get inbetween the cage and the swingarm collar.

Penton Talk / Dissolving Magensium Scale

Thanks for all the ideas fellas - I remember using devcon years ago in grinding mills (I'm a miner) and the stuff goes like steel, so I'll be hunting around for some plus the Gyptol.

I'll post a photo of one of the cases that I've "de-rotted" - it will make you cry :(

Penton Talk / VMX Magazine #25 Where art thou???

Got mine last week - Drakeford's 73 KTM 250 is veeery nice. Roger Harvey told me that Drakey may be selling it but looks like he came to his senses and has kept it.

By the way guys, I've updated the vmxktm website so take a peek and let me know what you reckon.

Cheers,

Wanted / For Sale / Shock position
March 19, 2005, 05:25:02 AM
G'day fellas, this thread is timely as I've just fitted a set of new Works Performance shocks to my 74 250.  These are the shocks that WP build for the KTM to mount them in the forward position while keeping to the 4" travel rule.  You can take a look at them here http://www.vmxktm.net/docs/74KTM250WP.html.

The exposed shock shaft measures 2", and after measuring with the springs off the rear wheel travel is 3 3/4" plus I'd guess another 1/4" for bumper compression.  Best part is that in the lay-forward position the bike sits up like KTM's are supposed to.

Will be racing tomorrow so assuming I get through bike inspection (Oh my Lord, a KTM with lay-down shocks must be illegal [:0]) I'll let you know how it went. ;)

Cheers

Penton Talk / Crotch Assembly
March 15, 2005, 06:34:49 PM
Wasn't me that bought it from you Donny, just a curious question from someone who's brain operates in KTM mode 80% of the time :D

If you can't use it, I would be more than happy to refund you if you want to send it back and I'll cover the shipping too!

Penton Talk / Crotch Assembly
March 15, 2005, 03:46:49 AM
When I saw the photos of this assembly that Donny had on eBay it looked like the mounting plate was identical to the earlier ones - the only thing I wasn't sure about was whether the actuating mechanism would function the same.  Without the benefit of owning a later model KTM, I can't tell whether the cam would have the same travel to move the pushrod the necessary distance for disengagement.  I just assumed that the clutch pushrod specifications wouldn't be that different between the early 80 motors and the Type 54 engines.  Most likely it was just some wild idea :D

Hey Mike L, did you receive the DVD I sent over before Xmas?  I hope I got the address right.

Penton Talk / 74 - 77 Engine/Frame Fit
March 11, 2005, 10:02:11 AM
G'day again fellas, I'm slowly sourcing bits for the 400 and wondering about exhaust pipe availability for fitting a 74 400 engine into a high-breather frame.  This will sound like a dumb question, but do the post 1975 MC 400 exhaust pipes fit the high-breather frames at all?

Penton Talk / 74 - 77 Engine/Frame Fit

Thanks for the tips Larry, never stretched the thinking to using a 175 frame!  All I need to do now is hunt down a 400 engine.

I made up a nifty holding bar out of flat steel.  One end has a hole drilled in to fit over the shift shaft, and the other end fits against the clutch basket to hold it in place when working on the nut.

Penton Talk / 1973 Penton 250
December 06, 2004, 07:16:35 AM
Funny, I was just wondering the same thing.  A 1973 250 with 'gearshift through clutch cover at some stage' is how I've seen it advertised many times.

Penton Talk / fiberglass gas tank
November 29, 2004, 06:25:43 AM
I've got a similar problem with seepage (and no, it's not due to excess beer).  Is fiberglass resin an option?  I was going to clean out the tank with solvent and then pour in some resin and keep turning the tank to coat the inside until the resin cures.

Would this end up being one of those "Doh!" experiences? [xx(]
