Penton Talk / Lectron AHRMA
February 03, 2008, 12:52:41 PM
The 78 MC5 frame moved the steering head in 1 degree-footpeg mount moved forward-rear shock mount lowered. Therefore design change. If you can find a longer swingarm You will improve your turning, etc. The Maico guys use a Thor aluminum swingarm on the 78-80  2 inches longer and like the way they handle. I presently race my 77 MC5 250(on occasion) and am presently working on a 78 using the 80 KTM aluminum swingarm. 2 inches longer/ shock mount moved forward /15 inch Ohlins. Also using the 40 mm  KTM front forks. The ultimate test will seeing how it handles the severe whoops at speed. Yes I am planning on using an lectron and maybe a J P Morgen cylinder. OOPS got carried away. The 78 is not really the same bike as the 77.
Again just my thoughts,

July 15, 2007, 04:35:53 PM
Loyd, Some hubs 2 bearings. Some hubs will take 3. Bearing could be loose in hub. There is spacer between bearings.  I have succesfully shimmed bearings in the hub with aluminum from a Pepsi can

Penton Talk / Repairs
July 06, 2007, 12:06:41 PM
OK, I am trying to repair the pinch bolt area on a set of 78 Zoke lower legs. We have an excellent welder here in Tucson. But cannot find the right rod. So I am trying find/purchase enough rod to do repair. Maybe 2 sticks of rod. Wire I am not sure of. The welder says we cannot use the mixed rod/wire.

Penton Talk / Lead additive for the gas?
November 04, 2006, 01:43:11 AM
Hello,  Correct me if I am wrong. Lead was always explained to me as an octane booster. Whether 2-stroke 0r 4- stroke it takes a certain octane rating for your engine to perform the way it is designed. The lead free gas has a lower rating, so quite a few of us use race fuel/various octane ratings-- sometimes race fuel only or race fuel mixed with high octane gasoline(which is not very high). Aviation gas has a high octane rating, but now has a lot of additives which are not compatible with your engine.

Penton Racing Talk / total knee replacements
October 30, 2006, 11:12:15 AM
Gentleman, I was recently informed that I to will need a knee replacement in a few years. Motorcycles, horses, and surgeries do tend to wear them out. I feel much better about the replacement after reading your comments. Still racing mx and on occasion passenger for Al Wenzel on his side car.

Just curious. Do you have motoplat or PVL? I have had all sorts of weird elctrical problems on my MC5 and been surprised when I found the problem. Like Donny mentioned. Check all connections , including sparkplug cap.

Penton Talk / Ebay:off topic
October 29, 2006, 01:41:22 PM
When you restore whether for racing or show it becomes expensive. That Honda is a Mugen which requires very expensive and hard to find parts now days. It is very easy to spend $5000.00 on a classic or vintage racer and that could just be the beginning. I have raced Pentons and KTM's-MC5 thru the last few years and spent well over $5000.00 and they are not show bikes, but cosistent runners which have given me many 1st and 2nd places. It cost to participate.
Enjoy your Penton

Penton Talk / Getting Exhaust On 125 Six Days
October 23, 2006, 12:41:44 AM
HMMMMM! I had a 72 6-day and never had to remove anything to get my pipe on. But it took determination, patience, and a lot of twisting and turning. But it always came off and went back on. I had a simple exhaust tip on my stinger. A bulky muffler might hamper things.
Good Luck,
