75 Hare scrambler question

Hello all, new to forum. I just got the bike and I was taking it apart to put new piston and I noticed it has a GEM reed cage/intake on it. These are not stock are they??  Also I just got two hercules 125gs and I am wanting parts for these-any ideas? I figured someone here would know since sachs 7 speed engines...Thanks Bob

Hi Bob,
The GEM reeds were NOT stock on your bike. You might keep an eye on ebay for the Hercules parts.

Hello Bob,  Welcome to the POG site.  You will find it to be a great source of technical information, and entertainment.   If you Google "Hercules motorcycle", several sites will come up.   There is a link to a site which seems to be what you are looking for (parts available).   Do the 125 Hercules have the Penton Sachs engine or the SACHS brand Hercules engine?   What year are they?   joe

Just remember, if you need to replace a piston on your GEM reed equipped engine, the piston must be modified for it. A stock piston will not work correctly.

Hello Bob, Welcocme to POG.  For Hercules parts, check the home page under parts suppliers, and look for Fischer Cycle located in Butler, PA.   If he doesn't have it, he could give you an idea who might.  Best Of Luck !    Nelson McCullough

Thank you Randy, that is what I have been doing-for the last week that I have had these hercules...Hello Joe, thanks for the welcome. These are the sachs 7 speed engines that came in the last batch of bikes that used sachs engines-after the penton, dkw, monarch, tyran, etc etc...Britt-THANK YOU, I did not know that there was a modification to do to the piston, but I will be checking it out. Now that might be the reason that the piston was a little melted down and the top ring was missing..Thank you3 putt, I will check into that lead..

Somewhere around here I have a Dirt Bike Magazine write up about installing the GEM reed setup on a 250 KTM. It's in the July 76 issue which also has a cool write up on the 76 MC5 125. If you want to avoid all the hassle, you can make me a cool deal on the kit and I'll swap out yours with a stock intake, then you can use a stock piston. Just a thought.

If the POG tech site still exists, I saved there a copy of the DB article on GEM testing and set up info. If needed, have copies too, just ask.

LOl, thanks for the offer Britt, but I am an old yamaha man from way back-I know that reeds work and work good...sixdazed(cool name), You have them for parts or complete running bikes? If for parts I would like a 175 or 250 motor and pipe to put in my rolling chassis 125..Thanks Big Mac, I will do some research before making you dig up and copy the old articles, I know what a pain that is with life these days.

Bob,They are all complete.The 125 and one of the 250's are runners.Haven't thought of parting any out but i'll keep an eye out for an engine for you.
