Cageyar,
Sorry, but I didn't receive a PM. I'm not sure the message function on the site works all the time so best to email me directly by using my screen name here and adding @cox.net . Thanks !

WOW! I had forgotten about this thread I started a long long time ago. I took my steel tanker out for a ride and had a flat tire so while I had it on the lift I replaced the rear fender with one of Roberto's nice reproductions and a correct tail light mount I got off of ebay.

I recently picked up a one owner 1977 250 GS6 that had been sitting for over 40 years. I checked for spark which it had and cleaned the gunk that used to be the air filter and hooked up a hang tank for fuel. About ten kicks and it fired to life and I took it for a ride.

Overall the bike is in really good shape and I had to decide how I wanted to proceed with it. I've never really been a fan of the patina look and although it is mostly stock I've decided to restore/rebuild it. I've had one of these bikes before and did a lot AHRMA events with it and really liked riding it.

I have not gone through a penton in a couple years so this may take a while but will try to keep updates here.

I finally got all the crud cleaned out of the GS6 fuel tank and rebuilt the petcocks. I need to find one of the internal screens for one of the petcocks. I want to take the bike for a ride with it's own tank instead of my hang tank before disassembly.

Since the weather has turned nice I opened the shop and gave my other Pentons a good dusting off and took the Steel Tanker for a ride.

Dennis nice find on the GS.  Do you know what manufacturer made the piggyback rear shocks ?  Works Performance maybe ?  Thanks for a reply.

Does making a list for the other half of getting the carburetor & clutch into my rescue from Texas count?

They are Works Performance, I was going to change them out for stock but have decided to go with them.

Attempted to track down trans leak on '69 125.Is it normal for trace amount of gear oil to migrate through gear shaft/case opening? Not a big deal...just annoying. New clutch cover gasket and o-ring between shifter/starter have been my changes so far. Thanks for reply.

Harro,
It's possible that you may have some seeping through the case gasket at the split line as I've seen this happen before and so it's worth changing it as you did. Replacing the o-ring at the shift/kicker shaft is another good thing too. I always give the kickstart lever hub a slight tap with a hammer and brass drift after installed and tight to compress that o-ring between the shafts. Did you replace the oil seal in the clutch cover at the shift/kicker shaft while it was apart ? That oil seal can become hard and won't seal good sometimes. One last thing is to be sure you have a good copper sealing washer on the one clutch cover screw that requires this washer. It's the screw on the bottom of the clutch cover just slightly forward of the shift/kicker shaft. I've seen seepage past a good copper washer before and so have gotten in the habit of installing an o-ring on that clutch cover screw and then letting the copper washer compress the o-ring when the screw is tightened. Hope this helps. Good luck !

Dave...Thanks a ton for your quick reply. I looked right past that oil seal/bush in the cover. I think I missed that on the first rebuild and am surprised it didn't leak a lot more. Harry O

I just got back from Zoar Valley vintage motocross and while there met Ted Guthrie and friend at the POG tent. Great guys and walked away with plenty answers to questions I had regarding my 1973 ISDT 125. However, returned home and sort made a mess of fork seal I am trying to extract is original from 1973( see insert). I fabricated an extractor but one broke and other pulled past seal. Out of ideas. At this point only metal backing portion of seal exists. Ted recommended heat and tried that already. Out of ideas and don't want to damage aluminum tube it rests within. That's what I'm doing today on my Penton!

Let's dust this thread off and post some project work.  I have a 1976 MC5 125cc I've been finishing up.

Got this machine (well) used in Avon Ohio in 1978. My first full size dirt bike. My older brother tore it apart in the early 80s with the intention of rebuilding it. Thankfully my dad never threw anything away. I finally completed it this past weekend. First time it has run in 45+ years... started first kick!
