Penton Talk / Greetings from Italy
March 10, 2007, 02:20:00 PM
TO: MAU10...

My name is Mark Holloway and I see from you post, you're having a hard time reaching me. The reason is that my mail servers are set to reject all mail from Italy due to the high volume of SPAM that comes from there. What I will do next week is open up ITALY to enable my mail servers to receive messages from Italy. Send your message to [email protected]. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm always fighting spam and currenly only allow mail from the US, Australia, England, Germany and of course, Sweden. :)

Best Regards,

Mark Holloway

Penton Talk / PayPal scam

I had something along these lines. But the twist was the message said "You have been outbid" Looked exactly like an official EBAY message. Since I was purchasing things at the time, I clicked the link to login to see who outbid me. After entering my username and password, I clicked the login button and immediately I knew I had screwed up.

Withing a few seconds I went over to EBAY and looked for the "Change Your Password" information. Luckily I found it quickly, but it's hidden (Recommendation - Find this link and bookmark it for future reference)

I made the change and then went to PAYPAL to find the change your login screen, also hard to find in a panic (Recommendation - Find this link and bookmark it for future reference) and made the change there as well.

WHEW! All of this in a few minutes. As much adrenalin there as going around the first turn after a start.

So, the lesson learned it that if you get an "Outbid" notice, make darn sure you're going to the correct EBAY address. Better yet, don't click on the link...just go to //www.ebay.com, and from there login.

Penton Talk / Piston Ring Help
February 12, 2005, 03:02:05 PM
Thanks Bob. I knew the answer could be found here. These rings came out of a Monark inventory and I'm just trying to figure out what they are. Probably not worth much.

Penton Talk / Collect ing or
January 25, 2005, 03:09:24 AM
When Carlsbad closed last year, I went over and took over 300 photos of the USGP track...from every conceivable angle and then proceeded to fill two 5 gallon buckets with dirt from the first turn...probably the most photographed first turn in MX history.

I lugged those buckets back up the hill, loaded them in my truck and took them home.

The next day, unceremoniously, I spread that dirt out over my entire backyard. It filtered through the grass and disappeared.

Silly....maybe.

However, when I walk around my backyard, I'm walking on some of the dirt that all the great MX riders of my youth rode across....Decoster, Smith, Lackey....you know who I'm talking about.

Most will always see it as just a backyard. For me, it's a pretty special place.

Believe it or not!

Penton Talk / Dalesman Puch
December 27, 2004, 05:32:23 PM
There's only a few people I know of messing around with Dalesmans. I'm restoring one for my 1973-74 125 collection, Larry Hladki is doing one, and Doug Lent has a few.

The Dalesman are fairly rare, but you do see them from time to time.

Parts do come up on EBAY. There were some on there last month.

Wanted / For Sale / Seat Trim
December 18, 2004, 03:08:10 AM
Thanks Ron, I'm looking for trim in bulk so I can make some for Monark seats.

On a side note, if I get enough interest, I'll have Monark seat foams made, if anyone is interested.

Penton Talk / "Spray Bomb"

Couple of points to consider...

Having looked at a stack of NOS Ossa Phantom fenders, a bunch of NOS Bultaco fenders, 4-5 NOS Suzuki TM Fenders, a row of NOS Husky frames and brand new out of the box CZ frames, I can say that's there's probably no such thing as the absolute "correct" color (even from the factory), simply because it tended to change from batch to batch. The changes were subtle, and in the absence of anything to compare it to, it's hard to tell what Penton Blue, Husky silver, Phantom blue and Suzuki yellow is exactly. So, if you can find something NOS, color match that, and rest comfortably knowing you have the correct color.

When matching paint, make sure you are looking at the match during the day, outside, late morning to early afternoon. It is at this time the color temperature of light is around 5600 to 6500 degrees Kelvin. Very early in the morning, or later in the afternoon, color temperature is affected by the density of the atmosphere the sunlight is shining through and will throw a redish-orange cast to everything.

Avoid matching paint under Flourscent light. Flourscent light appears around 4200 degrees Kelvin and throws a green cast.

Avoid matching paint under Incandescent light. Incandescent light appears around 2400 degrees Kelvin and throws a warm orange-red cast.

When matching tank paint, look underneath the tank. That will be your best bet in matching the color, since it hasn't been faded by the sun. If you're still unsure, rub a little "Color Back" on the area to remove any dirt, grime or "anything" other than the original paint.

Concerning spray cans.....the majority, if not all do not contain a "hardener". You spray them on and if you do any riding, they don't hold up well. It's not a problem for most, you simply apply more paint. I suggest a good single or two stage paint with hardner.

Penton Talk / 35mm Fork Identification
November 21, 2004, 11:27:10 PM
This box of NOS fork tubes was included in a Monark Inventory I purchased. As far as I know, all Monarks had 32mm fork tubes. This inventory also had some Royal Enfield parts as well. At least they are somewhat standard...I have a pair of Dalesman fork tubes that are 33.33mm. I wonder who was responsible for that. :)

They are 35mm from top to bottom. No taper. Someone needs these NOS tubes if I can just figure out what they are. :)

Penton Talk / porting info
November 09, 2004, 02:34:07 AM
After purchasing the remnants of the old Monark / Inter-Trends inventory, I ran across "Technical Information Sheets" (as they called them) which shows step by step how to take a Monark/Sachs MX engine and bring it up to GS specs. Complete information and diagrams can be found at...

http://www.vintagemonark.com/technical.htm

Enjoy!

You could sue in small claims court or seek compensation in a civil trial. If you have 3-5 years to wait for your trial date, have enough "cubic" dollars to pay for an attorney versed in confusing copyright law and can prove you were actually damaged and not simply inconvenienced, I'd say go forward.

When it's all said and done and you win your case AND get a significant judgment against the guy, you still might have a hard time collecting any compensatory damages, especially after the guy goes out and files bankruptcy.

Maybe the better route to go is to simply ask the guy to give you photo credit, with a link back to this site. Thus everytime he uses your photo, POG benefits and you get the satisfaction of knowing everyone that reads his Penton ad learns your name. :)
