Penton Racing Talk / short wheel base 400
December 20, 2012, 11:07:09 AM
Hey Thom

Yeah, it sucks to see the Farm off the AHRMA schedule.  It's vintage perfection.

While I haven't had a chance to talk to Wayne since the debacle I have talked to him enough in the past to doubt parts of the story being broadcast by others. He's a reasonable fellow and has more than enough background with Mudslingers to know how to put on an event.

I have no inside information but I suspect Wayne was growing weary of the attitude certain AHRMA people bring to the table. I will not be surprised in the slightest to see Wayne's farm as a venue for some other vintage group, whether that be PNWVMX or Dinosaur Daze or whoever.

Sure.
Had it at the AHRMA race at Hannegan earlier this summer.  That race was awesome and I will most definitely be back.  The 400 sucked a base gasket right before the Farm and I didn't have the time to tear it down or else I'd have been there. Of course if the Farm goes away that's one less AHRMA race to attend in a state that isn't exactly teaming with them. Southern Oregon and California are to long of drives for me to make with any consistancy.

Its easier for me to make more of the Woodland and PNWVMX races, as they are a lot closer to home.

Yup. Same bike JP had for sale on here a while back.

It's a real handful. I'm gonna have to get in some better shape if I want to ride it hard for more than 2 laps. A lot twitchier than a high breather setup.

My goodness Jon, there's thinning the herd and then there's an old fashion cattle drive.  Are you giving up the vintage racing?

By the way guys Jon's bikes are well worth the money.

Wow, that's one nice machine.

The 73 250 Harescrambler, my favorite Penton of all.  (My first too!)

Here is a shot of a Penton in action at the Farm.

I think this is one of the Kauai boys.

Here is the same bike in the pits.

Jon

Yes that is the same bike you are thinking of.  It was running very hard.  I had a interesting time getting it race ready.  Whoever had been working on it previously needed thier tools taken away.  Seriously, there was some goofy stuff with that bike.

My 73 is still apart.  When it blew it ripped the rod in half.  I took the engine out of the frame and tranny oil came out of the crank area when I turned it upside down.  I just can't bring myself to split the cases.  I know it's going to be ugly.

I was standing right next to Bill and Thom when they were working out the deal on the Mint.  Grubin is only going to get faster when he moves from the Husky to the Penton.

With VDR returning to Woodland I hope you can make some races there.

Thanks Thom

Man that 74 was running good!

Last time I tore down my 73 I noticed that my swingarm was twisted and the rear of the frame was bent.  I think that was causing me a lot of grief on the track.  The 74 has no such issues and it was handling like a dream.

Last night I discovered why it quit on the last moto.  It blew a base gasket.  Sound familiar?  I think there was a base gasket gremlin roaming the pits.

You definitely need to make a Harescrambler your next project.  The power for a 250 is certainly smile inducing.

I'm looking forward to seeing you and that 440 Maico at Ward Creek this weekend.

Matthew
