Just dragged this old Steel tanker out of the raters of a barn over the weekend.  Been in there for decades. Cleaned the tank/carb/filter and it fired up third kick!

Just picked up this 250 MC5.  Frame #550-03573 engine #6-5412042.  The frame ID guide stops at 1977 and I was told this is a '78.  What do the numbers say?  Also, the date clock is blurry; I can't tell if it says 1976 or 1978.  Is there a way to tell from the numbers?  You can see from the second picture why the bike was taken apart.  How would you guys go about getting the ignition off?

Mick, The flywheel broke off? The crank stub looks short too. Would you be able to get a puller threaded into what's left of the flywheel? It should pull right off if your lucky!!

Yes, flywheel broke, so nothing to hold onto.  I'll try my air compressor tomorrow, maybe it will zip right off.

Mick,
In my opinion you have a late 76 engine, possibly used in early 77. All 76-77 MC-5's used the 550- frame numbers, and the engine is 12,042 which was most likely built in late 76 (6-5412042). I have not seen 76's with a serial number higher than around 3000, and your is 3573, so i would guess the bike is an actual 77, so look at the rear seat rails and compare them to this thread:

Thanks Mike.  My frame is like the top picture, so '77.  Somebody must have painted it orange.  When KTM took control in '78 did they change the 550 frame # use?

Good question, because I have a late 77 MC5 rolling chassis with an orange frame, and Gary has at least one orange frame with dual position footpegs. I wonder if that coincides with the time that John signed it over. The 78 MC5's have 855- serial numbers. Mike

Put the bike in gear, put the rear wheel on the ground, and use your air wrench, should come off...

DO not put the bike in gear unless you like damaged trans gears, but the air wrench will loosen the nut without having the bike in gear. Remember, loosen clockwise not counter clockwise. Mike

I got the nut off with my air wrench but the remainder of the flywheel is stuck.

Is the center steel insert still intact with the threads for screwing in a puller? Mike

Mike, the center insert threads are good, but unfortunately my puller is not and I need to get a new one.  I've got to go see Gary in a couple weeks so I'll wait until then to pull the broken flywheel off.  I think this bike will run soon.  Thanks for the advice!
