Dennis Brown is near Mark Hyde and can get ahold of him to twist his arm. If Dennis did not have something for him to ride I could get my 82 250XC ready by then.

I'll be there and I am bringing my '82 Husky 430WR for former National Enduro champ Mike "Snake" Melton to ride. My friend Craig Hayes says he is working on a new Husky Auto to Terry Cunningham. All we need is for Dennis to get Mark "Possum" Hyde to come and with Rudder we will have most of the '82-'83 ISDE teams.

Penton Racing Talk / AHRMA Sicily Island Event
December 27, 2016, 09:57:27 AM
Larry is right about how AHRMA used to operate and I was very vocal about it, creating some hard feelings with some of the people in charge at the time. Fortunately, things have changed a lot since Fred Guidi has been Off Road director for these several years, he and Dave are working together and making a difference like the addition of the Pre-Modern front disc brake class for example. The kinds of things Larry described unfortunately still happen, but they are happening much much less often.

I still think there is absolutely no good excuse for AHRMA not having a vintage kids class. I was told at several different times by the "powers that be" that AHRMA didnt have a kids class because kids didnt race back in the day. Thats funny, because I was racing at 8-10 years old on an XR75 and I remember having big classes of kids racing against me. It would be VERY easy for AHRMA to have an XR80/100 class for kids 12-15 years old, those bikes are everywhere and they fit the same exact specifications as an XR200 so they fit within the AHRMA technical guidelines.

Penton Talk / Mikuni Size for 250
December 21, 2016, 05:59:43 PM
I thought you already had a 34mm on it? If you want to go to a bigger size I would say 36mm but I thought you were pretty happy with the 34mm.

Penton Talk / Sachs Wristpin Needle Cage L/R Play
December 20, 2016, 04:40:44 PM
This exact bearing was discussed several years ago, '07 or '08 I think. We had several cages break with the expected result. The width of the bearing is not the problem, the poor quality of the bearing is.

Go to a KTM or any Japanese dealership and order an OEM (not aftermarket) wrist pin bearing for any modern 125, it is the same size as the Sachs bearing. As LG said, that bearing is garbage and is a ruined engine waiting to happen.

It appears so. I would prefer all of the Qualifiers be either individually scored by days or all as one event.

Penton Talk / Early 72 Six Day Questions

Is there a bushing in that side of the swing arm? It looks like they put a shoulder on there to replace the inner collar of the bushing or maybe for a needle bearing?

She's tough. She struggled but she never gave up which is more than half the battle in off road racing.

If you mix some non-ethanol pump gas with the AVgas the problems with the AVgas being formulated for high altitude becomes a non issue because the pump gas compensates for them. A mix of pump/AVgas works very well.

Penton Racing Talk / 2016 ISDE

Multi time Trophy team member and club team Gold medalist Fred Hoess won the overall for the FIM Vintage Trophy on an '86 Husqvarna 250WR exactly like the one he rode in his first ISDE in '86.

Penton Talk / Lighting Question
October 10, 2016, 08:18:45 PM
Mick, your problem is not the 12v bulbs per se, but the relative wattage. The original circuits are 6v/35W headlight and tail light circuit is rated at lower power, 6v and 4 watts. An equivalent 12v bulb will be half the wattage of a 6v bulb so that would be 12v/17.5W for the headlight and 12v/2W for the tail light. You probably wont find 17.5 and 2W bulbs, but that will give you a good idea of what you should be looking for, something like 12v/18-24W for the headlight and 12v/5W for the tail light.

Wire them in separate circuits, not in series, that is the intended purpose of the separate coils in the stator. The 12v bulbs wont over stress the stator because they have higher resistance than 6v bulbs of the same wattage which results in less current draw, not more. In other words, a single higher wattage 12v bulb by itself in the circuit is the same as two smaller wattage bulbs of equal total wattage in series in the same circuit. The stator can not be over stressed like a power supply on electronics, the stator sends out whatever unregulated power it makes regardless of what load you put on it, which is why the lights are dimmer at idle and get brighter as the stator generates more power with more RPM. If the load is too low, like a bulb rated for 6v/10W on the 35W headlight coil for example, it will simply burn out the bulb but it will not damage the stator coil. Conversely, if you put too high a load with a 64W rated bulb, it just wont make it glow, but again, it will not damage the stator coil.

Even if your tail light was wired correctly, that 12v/32W bulb is the equivalent of a 6v/64W bulb. In other words, even if it was wired correctly that tail light bulb filament is so heavy the 4W Motoplat stator tail light circuit can not do more than maybe make it get warm, and surely not make it visibly glow. Even for the 6v/35W headlight circuit that bulb is double its power rating so it likely would barely glow if at all.

Penton Racing Talk / Barber '16 Pictures

Yes, this is the same start area the first two years, '06 and '07. Other than the tight start I really like this course on the other side of the facility from where we were from '08-'15. Dave Lamberth and Chicago Jerry both did the best they could with what Barber let them use over there, but the side we are on now has more room, the course is about the same distance but not as tight.

The parking situation was excellent this year also, a massive improvement on past years.

Penton Talk / Rim Repair/replace??? Painting spokes???
October 10, 2016, 10:48:51 AM
A steel rim can be easily welded but if an aluminum rim is welded it will also have to be re-heat treated as the welding will make that area soft as butter.

I have an internal rotor Motoplat on my 84 KTM125 so I will rig up a battery and a switch for the Reunion Ride.
