Penton Talk / O/T Aluminum Fender Question
September 26, 2013, 10:33:12 AM
I bought a pair of the aluminum fenders from Royal Enfield. The rear has to be cut to fit and of course drilled.
The front should only be used for a low mount fender, which would be fine on your Wassell project.
The radius of the fender follows the tire in a low mount position, but the radius is to small for a high mount and doesn't look right.

Penton Talk / Old Works Shock Mounting Positiion

Pop the springs off and stroke the shock. Unless they have a piston to separate the oil from the gas they can only be mounted one way.
In the correct position the damping will be constant. Otherwise the damping will feel jerky.

Build it because you want it. The pride in restoring one of these beauties is priceless.
However, you'll never recoup your money and your time will be free.
Been there...

Penton Talk / Fuel Mixture
June 05, 2013, 10:59:41 AM
The oil burns when the combustion chamber temperature is high enough to reach the oil's flash point. Reducing the oil to fuel ratio is not a fix.
Gasoline is what cools the engine and oil provides lubrication.
If you have excessive oil coming out of the pipe your combustion chamber temperature is not high enough.
I've seen dyno test where an engine made its best power at 16:1. The down side is excessive carbon build up. But lubrication makes a difference.
When your jetting is to rich the excess fuel is cooling the combustion chamber temperature below the flash point of the oil and raw fuel and oil is going right out into the pipe.
Most people understand jetting, so you don't seize at wide open throttle, but don't consider that most of us don't stay wide open for very long.
Quite often its the low and mid speed range (closed to three quarters throttle) where we ride most of the time and jetting in those ranges is just as important as high speed jetting.
Just having a pilot jet that is to large can cause excess oil coming out the pipe over time.
Checking the plug color at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and wide open, will control excess oil with any oil or ratio you choose.

Penton Talk / Ported Sachs 125 Mods

Those ports are similar to what Yamaha did on the original 5 port design, back around 68-69.
They are feed through holes high on the piston that are aligned with the extra transfer ports.
They idea was that the crankcase could feed through the holes in the piston through the extra transfer ports.
As the piston descends and compresses the crankcase, it's pushing gas into the top-end before the piston closes off the transfer ports.
In the next generation, a second set of ports feeding from the base of the cylinder like the main transfers, were used.
Then came the reeded motors that had additional ports above the intake port that are opened into the intake tract and the piston holes were moved to the intake side of the piston.

Wanted / For Sale / Seat foam
May 11, 2013, 11:47:51 PM
Al's long tall foam is harder than a rock, I hate it.
It does keeps my butt off the seat though, so I guess that's a good thing.
I've been considering drilling holes in the foam, to soften it.

Great ride Brian, I really enjoyed watching the video.
I could see you picking better lines in the corners and going faster with each lap.
When you caught the traffic and that Hodaka got by, I started yelling at my computer, GO Brian GO!!
Way cool!!

Important to note, because the pilot jet feeds fuel in front of the slide, it flows fuel at all engine speeds.
If your extremely lean or rich in the pilot jet, changing the pilot jet will also change your air/fuel mixture in needle/needle jet combo, as well as your main jet. Get the pilot jet right first.

Wanted / For Sale / WANTED: Six Day 125 (CMF)
February 02, 2013, 02:07:07 PM
Hi Chad,

The pipe is a Circle F, bought it new.

It's my understanding, Circle F doesn't design pipes, just copys the original. It looks like a stocker up to about the mid cone, but doesn't have the outer baffling and end cone.

Truthfully, I have wondered if the stock pipe didn't make better power. For sure a lot quiter, but doesn't look as cool.

Also, the stock pipe is a PITA to install. I have to take the head off and install them together. The Cirlce F is no problem.

Ron

PS: Would it make a difference to anyone if I could get the bike to Austin, TX? I have family there.

Wanted / For Sale / WANTED: Six Day 125 (CMF)

Hi Joe,

You wouldn't expect the trickest Penton on the start line 1972 would have 5 speed A motor would ya? Kidding of course. It has the 6B 6 speed motor.

One thing I didn't mention previously, I didn't put a new rod in it when I built the motor.

I wasn't concerned about the expense, I just couldn't bring myself to throw out a perfectly good rod, for a little peace of mind.

Just didn't seem like the right thing to do, concidering their scarcity.

Wanted / For Sale / WANTED: Six Day 125 (CMF)
February 01, 2013, 04:34:12 PM
Hi Chad,
Probably more than you want to spend, but you could never build this bike for what I'd be willing to sell it for.
I've been out of work 3 years now. Job seekers over 59 with no college are not in high demand. Apparently experience is worthless.
Anyway, I would take $2500.00 you paying shipping. I'll assist any way I can. Bike is near Los Angeles, California.

Had it listed on Craiglist about a year ago for $3500.00 no takers.
Here's how I listed it.

1972 Penton Six Days 125cc (Motocross Trim) Approximately 10 hours. This bike is ready for ARHMA 125 Classic class. New parts include Piston and rings, bearings and seals, shift key, shift detents and springs, clutch plates and springs, factory clutch side cover upgrade, PVL Ignition, chain case saver and new 28mm Mikuni carburetor.
Bike has larger 35mm Ceriani forks with new seals and dust covers, Works Performance shocks, wheels were built by Buchanans with heavy guage spokes and Akront alloy rims. New parts include Renthal bars, new throttle, Magura levers and kill switch, Terry cables, stainless pegs, gold chain and alloy sproket, 1975-76 tall/long seat, air filter and cage. New Metzler MC5 tires, tubes, rim straps and rim locks. Has OHV Green sticker and currently registered in California.
