Sorry I don't have a lead on the picture you need Paul, but had to say how much I enjoyed your "rambling"...you can uncork that bottle anytime and let it flow! Great tales and memories that we want to hear.

Penton Racing Talk / Number 1! Again!

Awe geesz guys[:I] I had a ball and feel so blessed to have such cool Pentons to race and to still be healthy enough to go out and ride. It is not getting any easier... As I get older, the #1 plate means more and more to me, so thank-you for your kind words. Of course I couldn't do it without my pit man/mechanic/hubby-Gary Roach

Paul,

I pulled the top end off and didn't see anything. I have not split the center cases.

The Sachs "A" motor in my '69 Saracen has the m.Sp. marking on the filler cap, but no numbers stamped on the cases and no other markings behind the ignition.

Hey I have an 81 model front wheel/brake. Is it a lot better? Brake on my 74 is pretty weak.

It just gives the brake lever more leverage, but it's not much better.  Have you tried arcing the brake shoes to fit the drum?

32 mm triples with the 35mm tapered fork tubes ?

Yes. The 32mm clamps have a different offset than the 35mm clamps. With the 32mm clamps, it shortens the wheelbase and makes the bike turn tighter. I had the 32mm clamps machined out for the 35mm clamps.

Congrats Toni Roach, First Lady of Moto!

Gary, what did you do turn the front brake arm around on her yellow bike.  Just switch the direction of the arm?

Mick

Hi Mick.

It's a '79 and newer KTM front brake assembly.

That's right Jake!

The AMA did away with the Womens class in Vintage Motocross (they still have it in Post-Vintage), so she just went out and beat up on the men!

And for the second year in a row, she competed in the Hare Scrambles, Motocross, and Trials events.

Penton Racing Talk / Old Ohio track
June 05, 2016, 11:49:46 PM
Hi Jeff,

Toni and I rode our Dual Sport bikes right past Badlands today! I only live about 5 miles from where it's located.

The scoring tower, starting gate, and all of the fences are gone. Most of the track that was out in the open is all grown up with trees, shrubs and high weeds, and you can't tell that there was ever a track there. The parts of the track that went up into the woods are still there, and for the past couple of years a GP has been held on the property, and those parts of the track are still being used. And they still use the old downhill jump....but it's all wore down, so now it's just a hump.

This is one of our friends, Guy Longwell, on his #24 Penton 400 at Badlands in 1975.

Notice all of the red jerseys? Read this article about Badlands and the jerseys on RacerXOnline:

If you look really close to this black and white aerial photo from 1996, you can still make out some of the track.

If you want to pull it up on Google Earth, the track is located about a mile north of St Rte 7 on Farson Avenue.

Penton Racing Talk / Mid Ohio Golf Carts
May 01, 2016, 11:23:41 PM
In order to guarantee that they will hold a cart for you, you must prepay in advance. If you only reserve one and don't prepay, it's first come/first serve, and there is no guarantee that they will hold a cart for you.

When you prepay in advance, you can request a 2, 4, or 6 passenger cart. If you want a cart with a roof (it is not listed on their rental request form), you'll need to call them.

Read this old topic from 2003:

I use one of the Auto Zone pullers and it works great.

Wanted / For Sale / Too Many Projects!! (SOLD)
March 07, 2016, 01:40:23 AM
A couple more of Jack's trademarks were that he would paint the axles orange so that he could easily find them on the ground if they ever had to be removed, and also, on the left rear chain adjuster, he welded the wheel spacer to the adjuster so that it would make it quicker to remove and install the rear wheel.

Paul, you're exactly right.

For those of you who don't know this, on any of the cylinders that Carl Cranke ported for Jack, Jack would cut the corners of the fins off with a band saw so that he would recognize it.

Here's a close up of Jack's '77 250 with a Carl Cranke ported cylinder.

Penton Talk / Title question
March 04, 2016, 08:27:36 PM
It varies from State to State. Here in Ohio, you have to have the bike inspected, and if it passes, you'll be given the proper paperwork to take to the DMV so that the title can be changed, and then you can apply for plates. Some inspectors can be picky, but they're just doing their job. Little things like non-DOT approved tires could fail your inspection.
